LPN / LVN compact license

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) are covered by the compact, just like RNs. Here is what that means.

Can LPNs and LVNs get a compact (multistate) license?

Yes. The Nurse Licensure Compact applies to LPN/VN licenses as well as RN licenses. (LPN and LVN are the same role with different state names — “practical” vs “vocational.”) If your primary state of residence is a compact state and you meet the requirements, you can hold a multistate LPN/LVN license valid across compact states.

LPN and LVN are the same license type

Most states call this role LPN (licensed practical nurse); California and Texas call it LVN (licensed vocational nurse). For compact purposes they are treated the same — both are covered.

Who qualifies

The requirements mirror the RN side:

  • Primary state of residence in a compact state.
  • An active, unencumbered LPN/LVN license.
  • Meeting the compact’s uniform licensure requirements.

Living in a non-compact state means a multistate LPN/LVN license isn’t available through that state.

How to confirm your license type

Check whether your LPN/LVN license is single-state or multistate in Nursys, and use the compact state checker to see where you can practice.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. LPN and LVN are the same level of licensure under different state names, and both are covered by the Nurse Licensure Compact.
