How do I verify a nurse’s multistate license?

Look the nurse up on Nursys QuickConfirm using their name and the jurisdiction that issued the license — that is their primary state of residence, not necessarily where they will work for you. The record shows whether the license is active, whether it is single-state or multistate, and whether it carries an encumbrance. A license from a compact state is not automatically multistate; the nurse has to have applied for one, so check the designation rather than assuming it.

The nurse’s primary state of residence issues and disciplines the license. The state where the work happens controls whether that license authorises practice there. Both matter: you verify the license with the issuing board, and you confirm the practice state honours compact privilege.

Does compact privilege cover nurse practitioners and other APRNs?

No. The Nurse Licensure Compact covers RN and LPN/VN licenses only. An APRN role — NP, CRNA, CNS, or CNM — is authorised separately by the state where the nurse practises, even when the underlying RN license is multistate. When a nurse permanently relocates to a different compact state, they are normally expected to apply for a multistate license in their new home state, and the old one ceases to be their home-state license. If they relocate to a non-compact state, they need a license issued by that state. Treat a change of residence as a trigger to re-verify.
