Nursys QuickConfirm reports the license type (single-state or multistate), current status, and expiration for participating boards. It is the fastest way to confirm whether a license carries compact privilege.
Checking with the Ohio Board of Nursing
For anything Nursys does not show — or to confirm official requirements — go to the Ohio Board of Nursing. The board is the authority on Ohio licensure; we do not make licensure determinations.
Could an Ohio license be multistate?
Only if it was issued or upgraded on or after January 1, 2023 — the date the Ohio Board of Nursing began issuing multistate licenses to Ohio residents. A license issued before then was single-state when granted, so a nurse holding an older Ohio license who has never upgraded will still verify as single-state no matter how long they have been licensed here.
Beyond Nursys, Ohio publishes its own primary-source lookup: Ohio eLicense verification. Where the two disagree, the issuing board controls.
What trips people up in Ohio: eLicense is a shared system covering two dozen Ohio agencies, so the first step is selecting the Nursing Board — search without it and a nurse can appear to be missing when the search simply was not looking at nursing. Worth knowing for hospital credentialing: Ohio states that its online status information satisfies primary-source verification for the Joint Commission and NCQA, so the result can stand as the file copy rather than being a preliminary check you then have to repeat.
Ohio's nurse practice act: Ohio treats advanced practice as ONE license with a designation rather than as separate credentials: § 4723.01(N) defines an advanced practice registered nurse as a licensee designated as a certified registered nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, certified nurse-midwife or certified nurse practitioner, with the designation made under § 4723.42. Worth knowing before assuming your own state’s structure carries over — New Mexico names the roles individually instead, and the compact covers none of them either way.
