What it is

CompactStates.com is an independent reference for nursing licensure and the Nurse Licensure Compact, operated by PGBDIC LLC, an an Illinois limited liability company. It explains compact status, multistate licensure, verification, endorsement, renewal, travel, and telehealth — and gets nurses to the official source quickly. It is not affiliated with the NCSBN, the NLC, Nursys, or any board of nursing. See about.

Audience

Nurses making cross-state career decisions: registered nurses, LPNs/LVNs, and APRNs, plus travel nurses, telehealth nurses, nurses relocating, new graduates, military spouses, and the recruiters and employers who work with them. Story angles from our own research

These are findings from reading every U.S. nursing board’s published material and statute directly. Each is checkable against a primary source, and to our knowledge none has been reported. Free to use with attribution; we will help you verify any of them.

Repealed compact law is still published and still looks current. The enhanced compact replaced earlier instruments state by state, but the dead versions remain in several codes. Utah carries both. Colorado repealed its predecessor. Arizona’s pre-enhanced sections were repealed outright. A citation that resolves is not thereby correct — see the adoption timeline.
One state left the compact and came back. Rhode Island rejoined effective 1 January 2024. Nebraska and New Mexico legislate for withdrawal in ways nobody has needed to use. Compact membership is not the one-way ratchet it is usually described as.
Official sources disagree about the APRN Compact. Published accounts conflict on both how many states have enacted it and how many are required to activate it. We could not settle it from a primary source and say so on the page rather than picking the most confident number.
An empty license search is routinely misread as an unlicensed nurse. We documented seven causes that have nothing to do with licensure — and exactly one board of fifty-six publishes what to do about it. See the seven causes.
Compact seams. There are borders where a multistate license stops at a road people cross daily, because one side implemented the compact and the other did not. Mapped in the 2026 report.
