Data updates

We keep CompactStates updated when compact-state participation changes. Here’s a plain record of when we last reviewed the information and what changed.

  1. Six statutes confirmed, and two published claims corrected

    • CORRECTION: the non-compact-states-by-region page listed Rhode Island and Vermont as outside the compact. Both are full members — Vermont since 2022, Rhode Island since 2024, dates this site already held and rendered correctly elsewhere. The answer was hand-typed and had gone stale as those states joined around it. It is now generated from the status data, and the FAQ structured data behind it was wrong in the same way and is fixed too.
    • CORRECTION: the APRN Compact page listed five enacting states. Our own per-state research names two more with citations — Iowa (Iowa Code ch. 152E, titled "Nurse Licensure Compacts" in the plural because it carries both) and Idaho (Idaho Code § 54-1419). The page no longer publishes a count at all: it separates jurisdictions whose own law we have read from those carried on lists we cannot verify.
    • Compact-statute citations confirmed from primary sources for six jurisdictions: Georgia, Arizona, Wyoming, Louisiana, Arkansas and South Carolina. Arizona matters most — the sections most search results still return, A.R.S. §§ 32-1668 and 32-1669, were REPEALED when the state moved to the enhanced compact, and the live text is at art. 2.1, §§ 32-1660 to 32-1660.03.
    • Coverage, stated properly: 38 of the 43 jurisdictions that have compact law now carry a citation we have read, 5 remain unverified (Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mississippi, South Dakota, Tennessee), and 13 have no compact law to cite. That last group is a finding, not a gap — a figure quoting "38 of 56" would imply eighteen missing citations when five are missing.
    • The published datasets now carry each statute citation with the page it was read off and a note where the citation needs one, so a downloader can check our reading rather than take it on trust.

  2. Spot-check against the NLC source, and what could not be checked

    • Re-confirmed the headline figure directly against nursecompact.com: 43 jurisdictions are currently part of the NLC, unchanged since the June review. That is the number this site reports, and it is right today.
    • Could NOT re-verify per-jurisdiction implementation status. NCSBN publishes it only inside a PDF that refuses automated requests, and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing blocks them outright. Massachusetts and the U.S. Virgin Islands therefore remain recorded as enacted-but-not-implemented on the strength of the June review rather than an August one.
    • The data review date is deliberately unchanged. Confirming one figure is not a full review, and moving the date would claim more work than was done.
    • Published research-coverage counts on the data page: 45 of 56 compact-statute fields resolved, 11 named jurisdictions still unconfirmed, 56 of 56 nurse practice acts cited. Counted from the dataset rather than written down, so the figures cannot drift.

  3. Source review and board-link refresh

    • Re-verified all jurisdiction statuses against the NLC member-states listing. No status changes since the initial review.
    • Updated official board-of-nursing links for Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Washington after the boards moved or renamed their pages.
    • Washington’s regulator is now the Washington State Board of Nursing (formerly the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission); link updated.
    • Replaced placeholder links for Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands with their current board pages.

  4. Initial compact-status review

    • Published source-backed status for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five territories.
    • Recorded 43 jurisdictions in the Nurse Licensure Compact: 40 fully implemented, Guam in partial implementation, and Massachusetts and the U.S. Virgin Islands enacted but awaiting implementation.
    • Noted Connecticut’s implementation on October 1, 2025 and Pennsylvania’s on July 7, 2025.
    • Confirmed California, New York, Illinois, Michigan, Oregon, Nevada, Hawaii, Minnesota, and Alaska as non-compact, along with the District of Columbia.

Subscribe to changes

Compact membership changes on its own schedule, not ours. The Atom feed carries every dated event in the dataset — when each jurisdiction enacted the compact, when nurses from elsewhere could first practice there, and when its own residents could first hold a multistate license — alongside the review record above.

Works in any feed reader. If you maintain a nursing resource, it is also the cheapest way to keep a page from going stale: the embeddable status table updates itself for the same reason.
