How many states are in the nursing compact?
The Nurse Licensure Compact currently includes 43 jurisdictions. Of those, 40 have fully implemented the compact, so residents can hold a multistate license and visiting compact nurses can practice there. The rest are partial, pending implementation, or have not joined. For the borders where a multistate license stops and the regional pattern behind the map, see the Nursing Compact States Report 2026.
