What is Nursys?

Nursys is the system almost every compact question eventually points to. It is worth knowing what it is, which of its services are free, and what it can and cannot tell you.

What is Nursys?

Nursys is the national nurse licensure and disciplinary database operated by NCSBN (the National Council of State Boards of Nursing). It is the only national source for verifying nurse licensure, discipline, and practice privileges for RNs, APRNs, and LPN/VNs from participating boards of nursing. For compact purposes, Nursys is where you confirm whether a license is single-state or multistate — the difference that decides compact privilege.

The three Nursys services

  • QuickConfirm — free, public license verification, available 24/7. Anyone (employers, recruiters, or you) can look up a license’s type, status, and expiration. This is the tool we point to throughout the site.
  • e-Notify — a free service for nurses to enroll and monitor their own licenses, with automatic alerts about status, expiration, renewal, and publicly available discipline.
  • Nurse License Verification — the service a nurse uses to send an official verification of their license to another board when applying by endorsement. Unlike the first two, it carries a per-license fee — check nursys.com for current pricing.

What Nursys shows for compact licenses

For a compact question, the field that matters is whether the license reads single-state or multistate. Only a multistate license carries compact privilege to other compact states. QuickConfirm shows this directly, so you never have to guess from a wall certificate. See how to tell if your license is compact.

What Nursys is not

Nursys is a verification database, not a licensing authority. It reports what participating boards submit; it does not issue licenses, grant compact privilege, or make licensure decisions. For anything official — requirements, applications, or a board that does not participate in Nursys — go to the state board of nursing. CompactStates.com is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Nursys or NCSBN.

Frequently asked questions

QuickConfirm license verification and e-Notify license monitoring are free. The Nurse License Verification service used when applying for licensure by endorsement in another state carries a per-license fee — check nursys.com for current pricing.
