Could an Alabama license be multistate?

Only if it was issued or upgraded on or after January 1, 2020 — the date the Alabama Board of Nursing began issuing multistate licenses to Alabama residents. A license issued before then was single-state when granted, so a nurse holding an older Alabama license who has never upgraded will still verify as single-state no matter how long they have been licensed here.

What trips people up in Alabama: Free, and the board treats it as primary source verification — but only "as of the date the verification is printed". That caveat is stated plainly here where most states leave it implicit, and it is the honest framing: any verification is a snapshot, which is why enrolling in ongoing notification matters more than the quality of the one-off check. Alabama also routes RN, LPN and APRN through the same lookup, so the credential-based split seen in D.C. and Delaware is not universal.

Verifying a CNA in Alabama is a different system
