Can a Massachusetts nurse work in Florida?
Florida would honour a multistate license, but Massachusetts cannot issue you one: Massachusetts has adopted the compact and not finished implementing it. Until it goes live, plan on a Florida license by endorsement rather than compact privilege.

Massachusetts license verification (Mass.gov) ↗Massachusetts states plainly that its Check a License result IS primary-source verification and that an employer may use and print it — so this is a one-step check, not a preliminary one. The trap is the license-number prefix. RNs and APRNs both use RN; practical nurses use LN, not LP. Searching an LPN under a guessed “LP” number returns nothing, which reads as an unlicensed nurse rather than a mistyped prefix. Names must also match the license exactly. A written verification for a foreign country or a non-board agency is a separate, paid, posted request — it is not the online result.

Florida MQA license verification ↗Florida is the state where the obvious route is the wrong one. MQA and FL HealthSource are the front door for Florida health-professional licensing generally, so that is where an employer lands — but the board directs NURSE license verification, RN and LPN, to Nursys. The MQA search will show you a Florida practitioner record; it is not the route the board points employers at for nurses. Official certifications are ordered separately and are a paid service.
How long each has been part of this
Florida has recognized compact privilege since January 19, 2018. Massachusetts does not recognize it, so the comparison is not between two dates — it is between a state where privilege exists and one where a license has to be held outright.

The statute is on the books, but the Board of Registration in Nursing has not completed implementation — so no multistate licenses are issued and compact privilege does not yet apply here. § 18 requires fingerprint-based state and national background checks, which is part of why implementation takes time.
