How do I know if I qualify for a multistate nursing license?
Two things have to hold. You must live in a state that issues multistate licenses, and you must meet the uniform licensure requirements — the eleven conditions every compact state applies to the same standard. Residence is the gate: it decides whether the other ten are even in play. The requirements themselves are mostly matters of record — your education, your exam, your background check — and the ones that catch people are a Social Security number, an encumbrance on a license held somewhere else, and a background check never needed before.
Why a checklist instead of a verdict
A list of eleven legal conditions is a poor way to answer a personal question. Read straight through, it invites you to assess yourself against all eleven at once and to skim the two that actually apply to you. Asked one at a time, the same eleven produce something more useful: a short list of what to sort out, and a shorter list of what to ask your board.
What this deliberately will not do is tell you that you are eligible. Eligibility is a determination and boards make it, having seen documents this page has not. The strongest honest result is that nothing you have told us conflicts with the published requirements — which is worth knowing before you pay an application fee, and is not approval.
The requirement that stops most people
A valid United States Social Security number. It is the one that most often halts an otherwise-qualified applicant, and it is unusual among the eleven in that no amount of preparation on the nursing side addresses it. Internationally educated nurses routinely satisfy the education, English proficiency, NCLEX and background-check requirements while still waiting on one.
The next most common is subtler: an encumbrance on a license held in another state. The requirement is not that your home-state license is clear — it is that you hold no encumbered license anywhere. A restriction you regard as historic, in a state you no longer work in, is still an encumbrance while it stands.
