Why CNAs are not in the compact
The compact is a nurse licensure agreement, and CNAs hold a certification, not a nursing license. Each state maintains its own nurse aide registry under federal and state rules, and there is no national agreement that lets a certification in one state carry into another automatically the way a multistate nursing license does.
Moving to another state as a CNA
Instead of the compact, CNAs use reciprocity (sometimes called “endorsement” or “transfer”) between state nurse aide registries. You apply to the new state’s registry, which reviews your current certification, training, and competency status. Requirements vary by state, so contact the nurse aide registry or health department in the state you are moving to. Why this does not get easier with each move
The difference from a multistate license is not only that CNAs lack one — it is that registry recognition does not accumulate. Each state’s registry decides independently, so being accepted in a second state does nothing for a third. A nurse who holds a multistate license gains the whole compact at once and keeps it while they remain eligible; a CNA who moves three times applies three times.
One question is worth asking the new state’s registry before anything else, because it is the one that decides a start date rather than a paperwork date: may you work while the application is pending? States answer that differently, and the answer is the difference between a gap and no gap. Ask the registry or health department directly — an employer’s assumption about it is not the same as the registry’s position, and the consequence of getting it wrong lands on you.
If you are becoming an LPN/LVN or RN
Many CNAs bridge into practical or registered nursing.
