When each one helps
- Temporary license: you need to start soon in a specific state (especially a non-compact one) while your full license or endorsement is pending. It is time-limited and state-specific.
- Compact license: you live in a compact state and want ongoing authority to practice across all compact states without applying in each one.
They can work together
They are not either/or. A nurse might rely on compact privilege in compact states and get a temporary permit to start quickly in a non-compact state while endorsement processes. See temporary and walk-through licenses for which states offer fast-track permits.
What to confirm
Temporary-permit rules, durations, and eligibility vary a lot by state and change often. Confirm details with the state’s board of nursing, and verify your underlying license type in Nursys.
