Whether a travel assignment needs a brand-new license comes down to one thing: is the assignment state a compact state? Here is how it works, and a per-state jump-off to the exact rules.
Do travel nurses need a license in every state?
It depends on the assignment state. If your primary state of residence is a compact state and you hold a multistate license, you can practice in other compact states under compact privilege — no separate license for each assignment. For an assignment in a non-compact state, you generally need that state’s own license, usually by endorsement. Always confirm your license type on Nursys first.
The two situations you will hit
- Assignment in a compact state. A multistate license from your compact home state covers you under privilege. You still follow the assignment state’s scope of practice and nurse practice act.
- Assignment in a non-compact state. Compact privilege does not reach it. You apply for that state’s license by endorsement — build in processing time before your start date.
One more nuance for telehealth assignments: you are generally licensed where the patient is located, not where you are. Run your exact home/work pairing through the compact state checker.

No. California is not a compact state, so a multistate license does not authorize practice there. A California assignment requires a California license. The same is true of any non-compact state.
You renew your multistate license in your primary state of residence (your home compact state). Practicing elsewhere on privilege does not create a separate renewal in the assignment state.
If the assignment is in a non-compact state, start early — endorsement processing times are set by the board and vary. If it is in a compact state and your license is multistate, you can generally start under privilege without waiting on a new license.
