What renewal usually involves

• Renewing before your expiration date (boards set the cycle — commonly biennial).
• Completing any required continuing education for your state and license type.
• Paying the renewal fee and attesting to your practice/CE as the board requires.
• Keeping your license active and unencumbered — needed for compact privilege.

Continuing-education rules in particular vary widely — some states require specific topics (for example, jurisprudence or state-specific content) and others set none. Your board is the only authoritative source for what you need this cycle.

What your state sets, and what it does not

Almost every renewal mechanic is the board’s to decide, which is why this page is a directory rather than a table. Cycle length, fee, continuing-education hours and topics, the renewal window, what happens if you file late — all state-set, all subject to change, and CE requirements in particular vary enough that a figure from a colleague in another state is worth nothing to you.

What the compact adds sits outside that list entirely, and a renewal form will not ask you about it:

• Where you live. A multistate license is issued by your primary state of residence. If you moved during the cycle and did not deal with it, renewal is often where that surfaces — and renewing in the old state does not fix it.
• Every other license you hold. Multistate status requires that none of them is encumbered, anywhere. A renewal in one state does not clear a problem in another.

And renewing does not confirm what type of license you now hold. If anything has changed in your circumstances, check the type on Nursys after the renewal goes through rather than assuming it came back the same.
